All dogs are beautiful inside, deserving of love and care regardless of their appearance.

However, some animal shelters have noticed that dogs considered “ugly” are often ignored by potential adopters, requiring additional efforts to encourage adoptions that look beyond appearance.
In 2015, a dog named Bjarni was abandoned due to his particular physical appearance.
This mixed breed dog, picked up by animal control in Huntsville, Texas , had a unique appearance caused by a deformity that left him missing half his muzzle and part of his lips .
He bore scars, likely from an attack by another animal, and his misaligned teeth made it difficult for him to eat and breathe. When animal control contacted his former owners, they sadly showed no interest in reclaiming him , leaving him behind.

Under the shelter’s care, Bjarni was fortunate enough to catch the attention of compassionate rescuers who decided to step in. Anne Graber , founder of the Texas-based animal rescue group St. Francis’ Angels , learned of Bjarni’s plight and took him in with open arms.
She promised to care for the adorable dog until he was ready for adoption. Graber described Bjarni as a cheerful and charming dog , despite his facial disfigurements.

Determined to improve Bjarni’s condition, Graber sought out experts who could perform reconstructive surgery on his face. She contacted Jason Balara of Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists , who agreed to operate.
The St. Francis’ Angels rescue group launched a donation campaign on its Facebook page, and supporters generously contributed $5,100 to cover the surgery costs.
The operation was a success. Bjarni underwent transformative surgery that reconstructed her nose and sinus cavities .

This not only improved his appearance—making him “ very cute and very adoptable ,” according to Graber—but also greatly improved his ability to breathe and eat . Bjarni came out of surgery a completely new dog.
With his new health and appearance, Bjarni’s destiny changed completely. He was soon adopted by a loving family , enjoying a fresh start and a much brighter future.
Graber expressed his joy at being able to help him, reflecting on how his fate would have been very different without the intervention and care he received.
